Teacher Assisting a Student

Technology

Tech Trends and Tech Learning

Technology enables the opportunity for learners to learn outside the classroom and at their own speed.  It helps them to access tutorials and enables the ability to do their work at different places.  The usage of technology within instructions/training supports the learners and their learning ability.  Technology increases the learner’s engagement within their learning.  It enables the students the opportunity to learn at their own pace and at different places.

Teaching mathematics in the classroom is already difficult, so transferring the instructions through an online platform was a challenge. One important aspect with mathematics is the ability to show your work.  As a teacher, in order to see how our students are misunderstanding information, we need to be able to see their mistakes they make as they complete solving a problem.  One of the resources that we had was Classkick.  Before the students could utilize Classkick, I had to create a lesson that trained the students on how to use it.  I created an instructional manual breaking down how I was going to deliver the instructions to the students and finally delivered the training via google meets.  Once the students were able to properly utilize Classkick, it enabled the opportunity for them to complete their classwork by showing their work.  Students had the opportunity through Classkick to video or voice record, type, hand draw, and take pictures of their work.  These features allowed the opportunity to see where students were making mistakes and address it.  Using Classkick throughout my instructions facilitated the students’ ability to demonstrate their mathematical skills and it gave me the opportunity to give them instant feedback and also plan accordingly based on their misunderstandings.

Nearpod

Students were not engaged in distance learning and it was difficult to monitor students learning.  Because we noticed the problem, we performed research by reviewing the literature and exanimating the different software’s that are resourceful and facilitates students’ engagements.  With the research at hand, we discovered that Nearpod contains many features that encourages students’ engagements and also monitors students learning.  We conducted an action research that established the conjecture that Nearpod is capable of tackling the problem that was observed.  After introducing Nearpod and training my students in using it, I was able to monitor students learning and also monitor students’ engagement.  Nearpod has features that enable the opportunity to check for understating and it has activities that engaged students in their learning.   Using Nearpod throughout the instructions, it made it possible to monitor my students learning and also it enabled the opportunity to engaged the students with their learning.

One thing that I found myself utilizing was a lot YouTube.  I created instructional videos and tutorials that educated my students and uploaded on YouTube.  I found myself creating a YouTube channel. These videos that I created were posted on google classroom for students to have access and watch.

Reflection

On March 15, 2020, San Bernardino Unified School District announced that all their schools will be closed and go into distance learning.  As teachers, this is where we began our explorations towards using technology to deliver our instructions to the students and explore many software programs that were adaptable towards the students’ device. This is where I also began my journey in enhancing my education with Instructional Design and Technology.  I was able to use what I was learning as a graduate student and implemented it within my teaching journey of the new school year of 2020-2021, distance learning.

Google Classroom

Google classroom is a platform that many school district decided to use in order to connect with the students throughout distance learning. With the knowledge that I acquire with IDT, I was able to analyze my students and create appropriate lessons that enhance students’ mathematical skills.  Google classroom created the stage of a classroom environment and it was where I initially provided announcements and links to the assignments.  I was able to organize the weeks contend by utilizing the features of google classroom.  By surveying the students, I become aware of their struggles with google classroom which enable the opportunity to create videos regarding navigating google classroom and I also created a lesson to instruct students on how to navigate google classroom and how to access their assignments.  Google classroom was the doorway of communication with my students.
